I find it absolutely amazing people celebrate here in New Zealand - in the Southern Hemisphere! - an event which occured in Brittain in 1605! Don't get me wrong, it was probably a good thing Guy Fawkes was found out before he could blow up the British Parliament building in 1605; but, why celebrate some 401 years after the fact in a country which did not even exist (at least, as New Zealand) at the time?

New Zealand has a major problem with fireworks during Guy Fawkes night which has quickly escalated in recent years, probably a result of a combination of massive drinking and explosives. This year a record 150,000 TONS of fireworks were imported - and there's only 4 million folks here!

The bottom line is people are extremely inconsiderate and unsafe with their fireworks, the result of which (hopefully) after this year's record chaos, will be a ban on the personal use of fireworks. There were many instances of folks pointing Roman Candles and all sorts of aerial rockets at people - not to mention the large numbers of fires set ablaze by their careless use. We can only hope Parliament will endorse only public fireworks displays. Our pets will thank them.

miss carousel: Do you mean during Halloween in the U.S.? That's interesting. I don't recall seeing much in the way of Guy Fawkes stuff when I was growing up in Southern California.
